Simple Present Tense Test 7

The Simple Present Tense is one of the most commonly used tenses in English. It is known as the “present simple” and is used to describe daily habits, ongoing situations, and general truths. For this reason, it is one of the first topics you should learn when studying English.


1. Where Is It Used?

1. Habits and daily routines:
We use it to talk about things we do every day or regularly.
Examples:

  • I wake up at 7 o’clock.
  • She goes to school every day.

2. General truths:
It is used for facts that do not change.

  • The sun rises in the east.
  • Water boils at 100°C.

3. Feelings and thoughts:

  • I like ice cream.
  • He loves his family.

4. Schedules and timetables:

  • The lesson starts at 9 a.m.

2. Sentence Structure

Affirmative sentences:
Subject + base form of the verb

  • I play football.
  • We watch TV.

Important rule:
If the subject is he / she / it, we add -s or -es to the verb.

  • He plays football.
  • She watches TV.

Negative sentences:
Subject + do/does + not + base verb

  • I do not (don’t) like milk.
  • She does not (doesn’t) play tennis.

Questions:
Do/Does + subject + base verb?

  • Do you like pizza?
  • Does he go to school?

3. -s / -es Rules

  • Most verbs take -s:
    play → plays
  • Verbs ending in -ch, -sh, -x, -o:
    go → goes
    watch → watches
  • Verbs ending in y (after a consonant):
    study → studies

4. Adverbs of Frequency

The Simple Present Tense is often used with these words:

  • always
  • usually
  • often
  • sometimes
  • never

Examples:

  • I always do my homework.
  • She sometimes plays games.

5. Sample Paragraph

I wake up early every day. I have breakfast with my family. I usually eat bread and cheese. Then I go to school. My classes start at 9 a.m. I like English lessons because they are fun. After school, I come home and do my homework. In the evening, I watch TV and sometimes play games. I go to bed at 10 p.m.
