Simple Present Tense (Present Simple) – Explanation and Practice Test
The Simple Present Tense is one of the most commonly used tenses in English. It is used to express daily habits, general truths, and permanent situations.
1. Uses
Habits and routines:
We use it to describe actions we do regularly or every day.
Examples:
I wake up early.
She drinks coffee every morning.
General truths:
It is used for scientific facts or things that are always true.
The Earth revolves around the Sun.
Water freezes at 0°C.
Feelings and thoughts:
I love music.
He thinks this is easy.
Schedules and timetables:
The bus leaves at 8 a.m.
2. Sentence Structure
Affirmative sentences:
Subject + base form of the verb
I play football.
They read books.
Important rule:
If the subject is he / she / it, we add -s / -es to the verb.
He plays football.
She reads books.
Negative sentences:
Subject + do/does + not + base verb
I do not (don’t) like milk.
She does not (doesn’t) watch TV.
Questions:
Do/Does + subject + base verb?
Do you like pizza?
Does he go to school?
3. -s / -es Rules
Most verbs take -s:
play → plays
Verbs ending in -ch, -sh, -x, -o:
go → goes
watch → watches
Verbs ending in y (after a consonant):
study → studies
4. Adverbs of Frequency
This tense is often used with:
always, usually, often, sometimes, rarely, never
Examples:
I always do my homework.
She never eats fast food.
5. Sample Paragraph
I wake up at 7 a.m. every day. I brush my teeth and have breakfast. I usually eat eggs and bread. Then I go to school. My classes start at 9 a.m. I like math and English. After school, I come home and do my homework. In the evening, I watch TV and sometimes play games. I go to bed at 10 p.m.
